The Trials of Being A Working Mom

Okay, so I have a whole new respect for working mothers.  I was a working mother, when I had just one child.  I worked for a few months after I had two, but my babysitter in our small town went back to work and I had nobody to keep my new baby.  So, terrified of being broke, but excited to stay home with my new baby, I quit my job.  Now, nine years later, I am working again.  I am a substitute teacher at my kids' elementary school and I love it.  I work 2-3 days a week, normally.  Sometimes more.  Sometimes less.  The problem is, I can't seem to get everything done.  I am WAAAAY behind on blogging and visiting blogs.  I am behind on laundry.

I am behind on cooking (we've had way to many convenience meals lately).  I am behind on working out and boy can I tell it.  I've gained two pounds and I get winded walking up stairs.  Not good.  I miss being strong.  I miss being thin, although I can barely remember the last time I was.

What happened to this chick?

It's not as if I have unrealistic expectations.  I mean, I know that picture was taken before I had four kids, when I went to the gym for at least an hour a day after work and had nobody to worry about but myself.  It's not like I expect to look like this:

But if I'm not careful, I might soon be blogging about the application process on The Biggest Loser.  UGH!  So, I've decided I'm going back to using Livestrong.com.  It worked last time.  It's only the first step.  I've also GOT to find more time to work out again.  I need to learn to take time out in the evenings to work out, but it's so hard.  The girls' have dance on Mondays and Tuesdays.  Wednesdays are usually free.  Some Thursdays are taken up by C's band performances at ball games.  Friday is usually free but honestly working out on a Friday night?  I'd much rather be snuggled up on the couch with my Hubby watching a movie and having mexican food.  That's actually my favorite thing to do on Friday night.  Obviously, I have some work to do.  Wish me luck.

So, what do y'all do to balance work and well, everything else?  Any tips for staying fit and healthy?

  1. I've been an at-home mom since I had my second child (he's almost 8). I am glad I made the decision to do it but sometimes I would like to go out and get a part time job. I've thought about looking into being a substitute teacher. Do you like it?

Even though I am an at-home mom I still feel like I spend a lot of time spinning my wheels. Mostly that is due to me taking on too many projects at once. I need to learn to say no AND I need to learn to manage my time better.

And I, too, need to get back to taking better care of myself and losing some weight. I started doing well back in the spring but then it all kind of stopped over the summer. And I don't think I can continue to use the excuse that I just haven't lost the baby weight...I mentioned he's almost 8, right?!

So, I guess I don't have an answer to your question about how to balance it all. I struggle with it all the time. Let's hope someone else can share what works for them ;)

    Have a great weekend,
    Jennifer

  2. Give yourself some time. When I returned to work I had the same rush of, "Wha?? There's no possible way to get ALL of this done!" After a month or two I found my new routine...you will, too. Now I'm re-learning a SAHM routine..ack, how will I ever get anything done?! ;-)

  3. Not looking forward to this! I have 3 weeks until I'm back at work & trying to juggle everything. It's hard enough to exercise when you DON"T work! My plan is to try to work out during my lunch...not sure how that's going to fit in with pumping, but I'll wee. Do you get lunch when you teach so you can take a walk?

  4. I've always wanted to be a stay at home mom but never got the chance. Now my kiddos are almost grown and graduated so I can't do it now either. It sucks (to me at least) being a working mom - I would much rather have made memories with my kids then having to worry about where the food on the table was going to come from. The only way I was ever able to survive being a working mom when my kids were little was the fact that I worked less than 5 minutes from home and could run home for lunch and throw together things for dinner or in the crockpot or throw a load of clothes in, etc. Other than that - when I worked in NYC - I never got ANYTHING done except on weekends and my kids did all the laundry and cooking during the week - they did NOT like that at all! HA!

  5. Even at my age, my life goes a little haywire when I'm working. Things don't get done like they should around here. It did get easier when the nest emptied.

The workout thing was always an issue. Right now, I'm following a new video "boot camp" at "Mary's Little Corner". Here's the first post: http://maryz-lit-ll-corner.blogspot.com/2011/09/boot-camp-and-continuing-my-journey-to.html

It doesn't take a lot of time, and she's had great results in changing her body shape in just the first three weeks.

    I want to order it!

Subbing is so hard because you can't plan definitively. I think that's why it's so hard.
(That, and the fact that you are a mom of four. )

I have been sitting here trying to thing of tips that you don't likely already know. I'm blank.

EXCEPT: If you are extremely stressed and a call comes to sub, it's OK to say that you can't do it that time. That one day's pay is NOT WORTH added stress. You'll just spend it on takeout or something like that.

Always do what is best for you and your family and not the pocketbook and it will work out beneficial for both the family and the pocketbook.

    From one who knows...

  6. I have no idea how in the world you can keep up when you have four kids and you are trying to work. I have no kids and nothing gets accomplished at my house during the week except for cooking a few meals. I hope that you can soon figure out a way to squeeze in some exercise time because you know it makes you feel much better. I pace around my room constantly, so at least I'm moving all day.
