What I've Been Up To

I am such a bad blogger, but in my defense, it has been a little NUTS around here lately.  The kids are out of school, except for L who is in summer school (so he can get his therapy, keep his routine going and give me a little sanity time).  The kids had bible school last week and we were getting ready for the arrival of our houseguests.  You see, my BIL, SIL and niece just moved back from Texas and will be staying with us for awhile.  So, we've been attemping to purge some junk and move some stuff around to make room.  They finally arrived a few days ago so at least all the heavy lifting is done for now.  WOO HOO!  We are so excited to have them. 

I've been working on the girls' room a little.  The twin beds and the girls' comforter sets are in, but the rest of the bedding has yet to be made.  We're still working on picking out fabrics, etc.  The girls' are beyond excited about it. 

Here is a picture of their bedding.  It was a set for a loft bed so there was no bedskirt included.  E says the bedskirt has to be pink.  Gotta work on that sometime soon.  We've also got to make the headboards and pick out the fabric for that and find some new curtains.  The brown has GOT to go.   So much to do, so little time. 

Upholstered Headboards

So, a few weeks ago, I did a little post about my Girls' Room Design Dilemma.  I KNEW my bloggy friends would step up with some great ideas.  Richella reminded me of her guest room with twin beds and upholstered heaboards, which she did herself.  Seriously, Richella ROCKS!  She did a beautiful job on her guest room. 

So, yesterday, my friend Christy called to see if I had decided what to do.  It seems she had two bed frames and a twin box spring she was about to donate and she said I could have them!  YAY!  Christy, you ROCK!  I am hoping my in-laws still have the matresses from the daybed they offered us a few months ago, which would leave only one-box spring and the heaboards.  WOO HOO!  So, I've been looking at some inspiration photos that I thought I would share with y'all.  Check these out!

OH MY GRACIOUS!  Do you hear the angels singing when you look at that picture?  No?  It's just me?  Oh well!  Is that gorgeous, or what?  Okay, so you can tell by looking at my blog header that I love turquoise and red together, but seriously, how gorgeous is that?  LOVE!  Of course, my daughter would hate it, but a mom can dream, right!

The Girls' Room - Bedding

Because I haven't had much time to be crafty this week and because of
 
I decided to share my favorite fabric project.  Have you checked out The CSI Project?  They have a theme every week and you enter your favorite project. 

So, one of my favorite fabric/sewing projects involves the girls room.  I realized that I've never posted on the girls' room before so here it goes.  My daughter's share a room.  They are 12 and 4 - quite an age gap, I know.  While E is a tomboy with a girly streak, C, my 12 year old, is not girly AT ALL.  She didn't want anything pink in her room.  Her favorite colors are blue and green.  She picked her own fabrics for this project.  I picked E's fabric. 

I'd never made bedding before, but after seeing the prices on custom bedding, I decided I could do it myself.  Custom toddler bedskirts started at $60.  Custom double bedskirts started at around $100 and went as high as $230.  Seriously?  Um....I don't think so.  I think I spent $75 or so on all the fabric so I'd say that's a pretty good savings on my part.  AND, I have fabric left over for other projects.

We bought C's turquoise sheets at Wal-Mart and her brown comforter set at Linens N' Things.  We decided just to paint the room white because I knew she'd change her mind about the colors and we end up redoing her color scheme before I felt like painting the wall.  I HATE to paint.  She has the only white walls in the house.  Kind of sad, huh?

We're thinking of getting the girls new beds next year.  E is outgrowing her toddler bed.  She used to loooove her bed, but lately, she wants to sleep in a big girl bed.  I see a room redo in my future.
