Sew Easy Infinity Scarf Tutorial

So, are you into the whole scarf trend?  I love a cute scarf.  I'm a big fan.  Wanna know why?  Well, I'm not much of a jewelry girl.  I like jewelry, but I'm not good at knowing what goes with what as far as length, etc.  Not to mention that I'm kind of a klutz and tend to break stuff a lot, including jewelry.  BUT, I really need something to draw the eye up - and away from the excess junk in my trunk.  A cute scarf is the perfect solution.  I am especially loving the new infinity scarves.  So cute!

So, I thought I would try and recreate the look and make my own.  My SIL and I made a trip to Joann's the other day.  They had knit fabric on for 40% off.  So, one and a half yards cost $6.48 plus tax and I got two scarves out of that yard and a half.  That's much better than the $29.90 price tag on the scarf pictured above.

My fabric was 52 inches in width.  I cute four pieces at 12 inches by 54 inches (the yard and a half length).

Pin the short sides of the fabric together and sew using about 1/2" seam allowance.  If your fabric has a right and wrong side, pin right sides together and sew.  Press the seams out.

Now fold the long sides together - right sides together and pin.

Stitch using about 1/2 inch seam allowance.  Remove pins.  This will leave you with a long tube.  Turn the tube inside out.  This is where it gets a little confusing.  It's not hard to do, just hard to explain.  Take the ends of your long tube and match up your seams.

Now put some pins in from the seam to about half way around the tube.

Now, begin to sew the sides together on the inside of your tube.

You can tell from the picture that you're kind of flipping the inside out just long enough to sew.  It doesn't have to be perfect since it'll be on the inside.  Sew almost all the way around, leaving about an inch opening to push the seams inside.  You'll be left with this:

Now just blind stitch that opening closed.  All finished!  You can wrap it several times.  The below picture is wrapped three times.

Okay, so I don't look like a fashion model, but you get the idea, right?  Now, I just need to get some more knit fabric.  I'm pretty sure I need one in every color, except yellow.  I look horrible in yellow.  ICK!

Wanna closer look?

Have a great day!!!

  1. Really cute, Tanya! I'm not a scarf person, but it's because I don't know how to wear one and it makes me feel self-conscious. I used to be the same with jewelry, but I've started to branch out a little more in that department. I think it has something to do with turning 40 that I'm more willing to "stand out".
Anyway, I might be willing to try a scarf too, since you make it look so cute and easy.

  5. Really cute! I'm with you, I'm not a jewelry girl either and would much rather have a cute scarf like that one. I'm not much of a sewer but I do have a machine and always appreciate finding projects even I can probably tackle, LOL!

  10. You look fabulous! I love the scarf. I don't look great in scarves...can't ever figure out how to get them to lay exactly right. (FYI,I wouldn't worry about the buttons. Most bloggers would rather have a text link anyways--better for SEO). :)

Thanks so much for joining my Weekend Bloggy Reading party (and for linking back-I appreciate that!). :)
