Getting To Know You Thursday.....Favorite Birthday

Because I have so many birthdays in September (6 family members), birthdays have been on my mind.  We don't do huge expensive birthday parties for our kids every year.  We usually just get together as a family and the birthday person gets whatever they want to eat for supper and whatever birthday dessert their little heart desires - unless it's September and there is no pumpkin to be found for the pumpkin pie you want - then you have to settle for something else.  And, of course, we always have presents.

My favorite birthday was probably my 30th.  I know the 30th birthday could potentially be very depressing for some.  Truth is, I was too happy at the time to even think much about it.  I was five days away from marrying Hubby so I wasn't even concerned about my birthday.  I was completely consumed with last minute wedding arrangements and our everyday lives.

My birthday was on a Friday, which to us, meant Co-Ed volleyball.  Every Friday night, we played volleyball for our town's church volleyball league.  My parents played, Hubby and I played, all of our friends played.  It was our Friday night ritual.  When time and money allowed, we would go out to eat after our games.  It was a great time of food and fellowship with our friends and family.  After our game that night, we planned to go to my mom's house to pick something up before we met everyone at the restaurant.  I walked into my mom's house and out everyone jumped.  "Surprise!"  I was shocked!  All the people we were supposed to meet at the restaurant, were in my mom's living room.  I still don't know how they beat us to mom's, especially since there were no cars in the driveway.  We had a wonderful night of food, fellowship and kareoke (my friend's Hubby was a DJ).  It was the biggest surprise of my life, cooked up by my mom and my Hubby.  I don't think I ever felt more special than right then.  The happiness I felt that night and five days later totally made turning 30, not such a bad thing.

That's my favorite birthday memory.  What's yours?  Did you have a special party?  Did you get a special present or take a special trip?  I'd love to hear your story.

On a sidenote, I will be turning 40 in January.  I'm praying for a vacation with Hubby for the 40th and our 10th anniversary.  From my computer, to God's ear.  Hee!  Hee!

  1. Happy Birthday to you!!
My fortieth was my very favorite (turning forty isn't so bad especially when 50 is staring at me in the not so very distant future : )
Anyway I woke up to the sound of about 15 lovely voices singing Happy Birthday out side my bedroom window and then I was wisked away to one of their homes for a lovely brunch (the did make me stay in my jammies and handed me ugly slippers to wear and a cane too)
It was so much fun and I felt so loved

  3. Some of my favorite birthdays are from when I was a kid. I loved having birthday parties at our house because we would decorate with tons of streamers and balloons. I thought it was so cool that we always did crafts at my birthday and I was the only one out of my friends that would do that. I also hated birthday cake back then so my dad would special order a chocolate chip coffee cake every year for me. Birthdays aren't as much fun as an adult now...but I can always hope! Hubby turns 30 in November so I'm trying to come up with something fun without going overboard!

  4. Loved this story! I also love that expression, especially with the addition of "computer" where the mouth usually is. LOL.

Hmm... We mostly had family birthdays growing up. The ONE year that sticks out in my mind was the year that I got my tambourine. I wanted one so badly because I wanted to do the wrist to hip motion like Betty in the Archie Cartoon. (Even then, what an oddball...)

My birthday is Christmas Eve. I was so excited to take my tambourine with the kids in the neighhorhood while we went Christmas caroling. We sang "Jingle Bells" at nearly every house so I could play it.

There's more to the story, but maybe I'll blog about it someday now that I think of it.

Anyway, the tambourine birthday was my favorite.

  5. My sixteenth was a favorite, too. My dad took me out to a fancy dinner, and we danced. He made it special.
    Fun story!

  6. My 35th birthday was so sad, and I cried all night the night before. I was just just longing to be married and be a mom, and there I was, still single, with no babies, and losing hope every day. So, on my 40th birthday, which could have really been a bummer- I was so happy thinking about the difference 5 years could bring! I was married to the sweetest man ever, had a beautiful girl and a beautiful baby boy, and had just quit my job to stay at home with the kids. I didn't love being 40, but I sure loved all the wonderful blessings that came my way! I think that might be my favorite birthday ever.
