Dining Room Window Treatments

Back in July, when I was expecting company, I made a few improvements.  Some of them I liked.  Some of them......I'm not so sure about.

This is my big ole dining room window.  I desperately wanted some kind of window treatments, something simple.  I had some fabric left over from this project.

This is the fabric.  I loved that it had a little red, but also some black, gold and green.  So, with my leftover fabric, I made a little topper, a valance I guess.  I think I hate it.  What do y'all think?  I ran out of fabric so I had to just use what I had.

I do realize that Hubby hung it to low, but I wasn't paying attention and I figured I would wait until I got ready to change the whole thing before I made him redo it.  Do you think it's too small?  I'm thinking I need something.....more.....something.  I didn't have enough fabric to make it long enough to gather up so it's more like a straight panel.  Not good.  I think maybe I need something longer too, but my floor gets sooooo dirty with all these kids around.  What do y'all think?  I thought about drop cloth treatments with some ribbon around the edges or maybe a contrasting fabric on the bottom.  I'm not sure yet,  but I think they plain drop cloths would be too light for all the color.  Do you agree or disagree?  I'm really thinking something like this:

Ballard Designs

Aren't they pretty?  Well, these are not available anymore, but I know I could make them for less than they would've been since everything they have is EXPENSIVE!!!  Not to mention that these are silk - not so great with kids.

So, what do you think?  Be honest!  No hurt feelings here.

  1. LOVE the color of you walls!!!! And I'm so jealous that you made the valence!! We made window treatments using a cardboard box and hot glue - must take pictures :)

I love the ones from Ballard designs - I bet they (or something you whip up) would be perfect!

  2. I think that you do need more curtain. I think that the drop cloth would be to light and not heavy enough for the red paint. Just my 2 cents! LOL!

  3. I like your valence & adore the red on the walls. I have two ideas: one is to take a white sheet and tape it to the wall next to the window for a day or two with painters tape. Live with that & see how you like the pale drape on the darkish wall. The blinds are already a bright white, so I think it would be ok, but you could give it a test run this way. The other idea is using the drop cloths for drapes but tea staining them first in a big bucket or the bath tub.

  4. BRAVO you made the curtain! I could NEVER do that. I do agree it is too small, but I love it. I also like the Ballard curtains , but I am with you . They aren't practical for real life. I have no decorating advice because don't have the gift... But, I am excited to see what ideas you get.
    Have a pretty day!

  5. I love the fabric, but it is too small for the big window. Since you have a white table/chairs, I think a lighter color curtain (like a drop cloth) would be okay. Plus they're cheap, so if you end up not liking it, you're not out much $, and you could still use them for drop cloths! Maybe you could repurpose the valance as trim on them, either narrow down the sides or its current width at either the top or bottom.

  6. I love the fabric but yes it i too small for the size of window i think I would use the sam fabric and add a contasting fabric to the valance to make it longer and fuller Hang the rod about 2-3 inches above the window and bring the valance down to around 20 -23" ish

  7. I think you did a great job on your window treatments and the fabric is beautiful. However, my personal favorite would be the gorgeous black and white drapes by Ballard Designs - and know you can and will be able to make them just as good and save a lot of money doing so! xoxoxo

  8. I DO love that fabric...can you not get anymore of it? I do love it! But sadly, the valance is too small for that large window. I like the suggestion to put a cream colored sheet up to see how you would like the drop cloth look. Look forward to seeing the outcome!

  9. Well, first I LOVE that fabric. It's something that I would have been drawn too. Funny... I have the same feeling about my dining room window. It has a valance, and I want something longer.

Could you buy coordinating fabric and attach it to the beautiful valance fabric and then make it into panels like the ones in that picture?

  10. I love the print on the fabric you made the valance with. It is small and a bit too low. Ok, I will tell you what popped in my head...Keeping the valance but adding two white sheets (make them into curtains) and swag them to the sides when you want to see out. The white will pop with the white chairs and brighten up the room. I love the color of the walls by the way. A white hobnail flower vase on table and wow! But that's jist me. I'm jist sayin. ;-)
