Family Heirlooms

Hubby and I have been married almost ten years.  Hubby's family is very big on passing down family heirlooms.  His grandmother and mother have many beautiful things passed down from the earlier generations.  My SIL has some beautiful and sentimental pieces, including Hubby's grandfather's pulpit (he was a preacher).  I don't have many family pieces yet, but my sweet MIL did give me something last week that I just love.  You see, my MIL's cabinet tops are filled with old crocks and pitchers and platters that she has collected over the years.  Some of them she collected from flea markets and some are family heirlooms.  This is what she gave me.

She told me that her grandparents used the old crocks to put up peaches.  She gave me two of them and I just love them.  They need to be dusted and cleaned up some, when I get around to it.  For now, they are at home on top of my cabinets so my kids can't get to them.

What do you think?  I need to put something under them to raise them up just a little.

Someday I'll show you my SIL's antique table.  It's gorgeous!  But, that's for another post.

Have a great day!

  1. I love it!!! You probably know that I'm all about family pieces. I'm crazy about displaying the things that were once a part of our family's everyday lives.

    Crocks are among my favorites.
Psst. I still have not returned my mother's crocks to her since my last tablescape. I know I have to, but I keep... um... forgetting.

    Love it!

  2. What treasures!! I love old crockery and you've found the perfect place to display. I use a small piece of 1x4 lumber to lift up my above cabinets displays.

    Blessings!

  3. That is so cool! Neither of our families have passed down stuff. It's a wonderful tradition and connects you to the past. I love the story of your crocks - lucky gal!

  4. I love family 'stuff' that gets passed down..I think it looks great!! If you wanted to raise it..a piece of wood should work.

  5. Love the crocks that were passed down to you. How fun. I've used wood but I've also used books to raise things up so if the book shows it looks good too.

Debbie needs to know that her sister and her mother (the Duchess) both KNOW she still has all of the family crocks. She can't keep them just yet.

P.S. I tried your oatmeal banana blueberry bread last week and it was wonderful. My husband loved it too so it's a keeper. Thanks.

  6. We have several items that have been passed down through the generations. So many in fact, that we can't display all of them which is a real shame. We both really dig that sort of thing. Continue to gather those family heirlooms girl. They are priceless!

  9. WOW what a wonderful gift. These women are giving you a memory.

I have my grandmother's crock. It's a bowl with an edge and I can see her now making biscuits in it.
