I'm Dreaming of a Craft Room

When I was growing up, my grandmother had a craft/sewing room, which was always a total mess!  She arranged the flowers for church every Sunday so she had flowers, oasis and all of the flower vases, baskets and wreath forms you can imagine.  She was also an artist and had TONS of paint as well as a her sewing machine.  She was a very crafty lady.  We would go to her house and end up staying in that craft room for HOURS!  We would paint everything we could get our hands on - from canvas to wood to clothes.  We must have gone through thousands of gallons of craft paint.  That craft room is where my sister and I spent most of our time with our grandmother.

My grandmother's little craft room was just that....little.  It was probably 10 x 10 and we loved every inch of it.  It had shelves, cabinets, a sink, and an old dinette set we used as our painting surface.  It was our home away from home.

I've been dreaming about my own craft room lately...the one I don't have.  My craft/sewing stuff is scattered in parts of my bedroom and dining room.  I wish I had my own room with plenty of space for painting, sewing and crafting of all kinds.  As long as we're dreaming, let's dream BIG!

  2. Me too!!! I mean, that I dream too, not that I have one like your Grandmother did. I would love a space to create, and it would be dreamy to have one like the ones in those pictures. I have been eyeing some spaces around here, lately, in fact. We have to have a home office so that takes up a logical space.

    sulk...

  3. Ohh, how I wish I had a craft room. My sewing machine is in our guest bedroom, which is the size of a small bathroom....well, maybe not THAT small, but just enough room for the bedroom furniture and my machine. Anytime I think we are going to have a guest, I have to put everything up and away. And there is no place to paint except my kitchen table.

Next house I build or buy, will have a room just for ME. The end.

  4. My grandmother had a "sewing room" fit for a professional seamstress, which worked for her because she was just that! Oodles and oodles of fabric! I remember lots of satin and shiny fabrics when I was a kid. She gave my son a handmade pillow when he was born. Ah, to have a craft room like those you showcased! I don't really "craft" but I've always dreamed of having a paint studio equipped with acrylics, canvas stretching equipment, and an old-fashioned kick-wheel. Pottery was my favorite medium in every art class I've taken. That and painting!

  5. Ditto! I am soooo envious of people who have big huge houses with basement or extra bedroom space for crafting. My Nannie had a large sewing area in her basement laundry room that I remember, just barely. She keeps her stuff in one of her spare bedrooms now, but I remember watching her work at the old house.

    We can dream, right? ;)

  7. I sew in the eating area of my kitchen and keep all all of my sewing stuff upstairs in one of the bedrooms. That room upstairs could be a sewing room, I just need to turn it into one. I should get off my duff and do it!

I hope you one day have the room of your dreams to craft and sew.

  8. Why don't we have basements in Texas? I really wish we did for rooms likes this. I love all the craft rooms you pictured. We have an upstairs gameroom/craft/playroom/sewing room, but I haven't done anything to it yet. You can probably see why I haven't touched it yet because it's a room with many purposes and it's hard. :) I need some partitions or something. :)

  9. Your grandmother's craft room sounds so fun. You must have so many great memories of playing in there as a child! I've been dying for a craft room my whole life and I finally have one (or half of one). When we moved to this house, we wanted to have 4 bedrooms so we could use one as a guest room/craft room. I'm currently redecorating in there and it's been so fun to do whatever I want to make a creative space. I'll share it with any guests that we have, but mostly, it's just a place for me to hang out and do my thing : )
